The whole thing was an absurd and sensational spectacle.

The incident was especially funny because of Grant's subsequent appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Instead of dodging the issue, he went on the show and famously said, "I've done a bad thing, and I've let people down." This candid, slightly awkward apology became an instant classic, and the public seemed to appreciate his straightforwardness.
